FDC: RAF Centenary

This cover from Royal Mail commemorates the centenary of the Royal Air Force in the UK. Formed in 1918, the RAF is the world’s oldest air force. Find out about the RAF’s own centenary celebrations here.

The stamp designs on this cover are elegant, and the illustrations by Michael Turner are allowed to speak for themselves. It is just a shame there aren’t more of them. With 10 stamps on the recent Game of Thrones cover, I think that only six for the RAF is not good enough. I would bring the issue up to 10 stamps with the Spitfire, the Lancaster, the Harrier jump jet, and the Hercules. But that’s just my opinion.

Scramble! Scramble!

The insert to the cover gives a brief history of the RAF against a great photo of “Hawker Harts in formation at an aerobatic display over Upper Heyford in 1934″. Click the image below for easier reading.
