Stamps: Our Solar System

This fantastic set of stamps from AusPost commemorates our Solar System. This is their feature issue for Stamp Collecting Month.

Stamps Australia 2015 Solar System

Country: Australia
Date of Issue: 22nd September 2015

Stamp Details

This issue features a stamp for each planet in the solar system. These days, that’s 8 stamps. When I was a kid, it would have been 9, but Pluto was demoted to a dwarf planet in 2006. However, with a diplomatic nod to its former glory, Pluto is allowed onto Neptune’s stamp. The planets are named after the gods of Roman mythology, except Earth and Uranus, whose names come from Greek mythology (another name for Earth is Gaia, the Greek goddess of the Earth).

Above and Beyond

The new AusPost Collectables website has some great information about the issue.

There is also a dedicated website for learning about the solar system during Stamp Collecting Month:

    1. Not sure how long that will be GP, first stop Mars :) The distances of interstellar travel are mind-boggling. Maybe when the singularity comes and we all upload to our smart phones!
