This cover from Royal Mail commemorates the issue of the world’s very first postage stamp in 1840: the Penny Black.
Country: United Kingdom
Date of Issue: 6th May 2015
Date of Cover: 6th May 2015 (first day cover)
The Penny Black was issued on 1st May 1840, for use from 6th May onwards. Also represented on this cover is the world’s second postage stamp, the Two Penny Blue. It was supposed to be issued at the same time as the Penny Black, but was only available from the 8th May, for some reason.
The stamps in this modern issue use the same design as the original stamps, but with the silhouette of Queen Elizabeth and the modern postage rate (1st class). And the perforations are new.
