This FDC was produced in 1948 in the United States and it commemorates Gold Star Mothers: the American women who have lost a son or daughter serving in the military during war.

I bought this cover from Delcampe.net. I went looking for this stamp after reading about it on G. P. Cox‘s excellent Pacific War history site Pacific Paratrooper. (You can read that particular post here.)

The notation in the top-left corner of the cover is not part of the original item. It reads: Sc 969, which is the stamp’s catalogue number in the Scott philatelic catalogue.
