Stamps: Songbirds from Germany

I was in Germany again last week. Deutsche Post has a great issue out at the moment: Native Songbirds.

Songbirds 2013 Germany

Country: Germany
Issue Date: 8th August 2013

Stamp Details

From left to right:

  • Stieglitz – Goldfinch, Carduelis carduelis
  • Gimpel – Bullfinch, Pyrrhula pyrrhula
  • Blaumeise – Blue Tit, Cyanistes caeruleus

Für die Jugend

Some commemorative issues from Deutsche Post carry a charitable contribution as a surcharge. The postage rate of the stamp is shown, along with the amount that will be given to a charitable cause. When you buy such a stamp, you pay the combined amount. The donation from these particular stamps goes to charities helping young people (Jugend). The slogan on the selvedge says “Do good, help with stamps”.

Update 3rd September 2013: While I was in Germany collecting these stamps, I sent one on a cover to my good stamp friend Vera. It arrived today, click here to see it on Vera’s blog.

Update 4th September 2013: And as Vera points out on her blog, these stamps with a charitable surcharge are called semi-postal in the world of philately. Thanks Vera, I always learn something new from you!
