Souvenir sheet: Butterflies from Taiwan

A very interesting butterfly-shaped souvenir sheet from Chunghwa Post in Taiwan, featuring four stamps se-tenant, each with a butterfly cutout.

Butterflies - TW 2011

Country: Taiwan (Republic of China)
Date of Issue: 8th April 2011

A similar souvenir sheet was issued in 2009, but I don’t have it.

Stamp Details

I am having some trouble finding common names for these butterflies. Chunghwa Post lists the scientific names as follows (and I looked these up on Wikipedia):

Left to right, top to bottom

  • Euploea eunice hobsoni (research indicates this might be a Purple Milkweed butterfly)
  • Euploea sylvester swinhoei (Two-Branded Crow butterfly)
  • Euploea tulliolus koxinga (Darf Crow, Eastern Brown Crow, or Purple Crow butterfly, multiple names)
  • Euploea mulciber barsine (Striped Blue Crow butterfly, more or less)

However, it turns out butterfly IDs are a bit fiddly. I do appreciate the beauty of these insects, but I am probably going to settle for “two blue ones and two brown ones”.
